Your source for nourishment, inspiration, and joy

At Heyday we fully believe what you put inside of you is truly reflected on the outside. Although we tend to keep our plates full of #skinhappyfood, come early December we’ve been known to indulge on a few too many canapes and champagne at countless holiday parties.  The next thing you know, it’s 7AM, and we’re puffy, dehydrated, and somehow still full from last night’s event. We’ve all been there and agree it isn’t always our loveliest moment.

We tapped Heyday’s newest team member, NoMad Shop Manager and skincare guru, Amy Pellot, on her top tips for skin recovery following an indulgent meal...

What are the first steps on the day after an indulgent meal?

“First things first, when we over indulge, on both food and alcohol, we sometimes stay up into the wee hours of the morning catching up with friends and family.  Many people forget the crucial step of removing their make-up before bed. If you do, make sure to do a thorough double cleanse upon waking. Start gently removing the excess make up with an oil-based cleanser, (One Love Organics Vitamin B Oil is a Heyday fave) and follow that with a hydrating cream cleanser of your choice. Stay away from anything drying, since your skin is dehydrated and in recovery mode, make sure to avoid clay cleansers."

Okay, so your skin is clean and you’re feeling a little better, but what can I do to bring down the redness on my face?

"Inflammation and dehydration often occur after a day of overeating and drinking so the redness is super common.  Make sure that any products you use have hydrating and calming ingredients, like Naturopathica’s Lavender & Honey Balancing Mist. Not only is it a nice refresher, it also feels amazing. Follow the toner with a creamy moisturizer to keep the skin as hydrated as possible.

If you’re laying low and hanging out at home all day, lean into the day of relaxation and make a mini-spa day at home.  Start by applying a hydrating mask, like Alchimie Forever’s Kantic Moisture Mask, that is full of antioxidants to help fight inflammation & free radical damage. To really de-puff, put a cold compress on top of the mask and lay down.  Not only will your head thank you, you’ll also notice reduced redness in the face.

For extra de-puffing, add an eye cream that contains caffeine to the mix.  Dab a teeny amount on your index finger and gently apply it in upwards motions on the upper cheek bone (not near the eye socket.)  It also feels great to apply the cream and tap acupressure points along the bone."

What if you’re already late for work or don’t have all day to lounge around in a mask? Any other tips?

Just make sure to hydrate as much as possible.  After cleansing, toning and moisturizing, apply a tinted SPF and go makeup free to let the skin recover from all the holiday cheer!
