By eating the Sakara way, you’re putting the highest-quality organic ingredients into your body. You’re nourishing every system, every organ and every cell with fresh, healing, nutrient-rich foods. Doesn’t your skin, your largest organ deserve the same respect?
Just like the foods you put into your body show on the outside, the products you put on your skin can make their way into your bloodstream. A recent study confirms that what goes on, goes in; after just three days of using products free of potentially hormone-disrupting chemical ingredients, participants had measurably lower levels of these toxins in their bodies. So it makes sense not to put anything on your skin that you wouldn’t want inside your precious body, right?
We chatted with Credo Beauty’s Whitney Friedt, a licensed aesthetician, about why clean beauty matters, the products she swears by and where to start if you're looking to clean up your act.
Why is clean beauty important?
It really comes down to our health. People wouldn’t eat toxic chemicals so why would they want to put them on their body, which eventually will end up in their body? Why not feel good inside and out?
Should all of our beauty and skincare products be clean, or are some more important than others?
Anything that is going on your skin will end up inside your body eventually so in the end, if you can, I think it’s best to keep it all clean. It’s not the most ideal situation to just throw all of your products away, so start small if you must. Switch out your cleanser or moisturizer and then fill in the gaps as you go. Figure out your main concern and that will lead you to the right brand.
What makes a brand or product Credo-quality?
Mainly our Dirty Ingredients list. We make sure that there is nothing toxic or harmful in any of our products. Also, everything is cruelty free; no animals are harmed in the making of the products we carry.
What are the top 3 toxic ingredients to look out for and avoid? Why should we stay away from these ingredients?
Parabens: These are estrogen-mimicking preservatives that can disrupt the endocrine system and cause reproductive and developmental disorders.
Benzophenone/Oxybenzone: This can be found in sunscreens and could promote the generation of potentially harmful free radicals.
Phthalates: They have the ability to mimic human hormones and can also be endocrine disrupters.
What is one of your favorite clean ingredients to look for in products? What makes it effective?
Honey is great! It is a natural antioxidant and has antimicrobial properties. You can add it to powder masks and it’s like an added boost.
What are some of your personal favorite clean beauty products?
January Labs Restorative Tonic Mist is one of my new favorite products. It helps keep my breakouts to a minimum and takes away any redness. I use this day and night!
Skin Owl’s Eye+ is amazing in the mornings, I keep it in a cool place and it immediately makes me feel awake and refreshed when I apply it.
I use Tata Harper’s Purifying Cleanser in the evenings a few times a week. I love using it right after I’ve worked out. My skin feels amazing and decongested after I’ve used it. You can leave it on for a few minutes as a mask to if you’d like.
How do you practice clean beauty from the inside out?
I try to watch what I’m eating. Food is a big part of being clean as well. I try to pack my diet with things that will actually benefit my body. I also love to take kickboxing classes or do a Pilates class. Nothing feels better than sweating all of the bad stuff out!
