Ariane Goldman “believes in the power of clothing for before, during and after” pregnancy. She wants women who are adapting to these physical changes to feel confident, supported and heard through the power of clothing that makes you feel empowered in your own skin. Enter Hatch, founded by Ariane when she was pregnant with her first child and searching for something within the maternity clothing market that she couldn’t fined. Below Ariane sums of motherhood in 3 words, shares her definition of post-baby sexiness, and how she has a bigger vision to create a community through a clothing brand.
Can you share with us your journey, and how you came to create this beautiful shopping destination?
I was newly pregnant in 2010 and frustrated by the lack of stylish clothing options in the maternity market. Following the birth of my daughter Charlie, I launched HATCH to serve as a trusted resource for women who want to feel beauty, confidence, and style during one of life’s most rewarding (yet also most challenging) periods. When I was pregnant there was no one speaking to me, so I wanted to start the conversation.
Today, the conversation is so much bigger. We’ve built a community of women who not only want to invest in pieces for themselves, but ask questions, meet each other, and learn about products that are good for them and that can nourish them in this moment. In order to continue to feed our passions and our babies, we need to take care of our bodies, holistically and intentionally.
What do you think drew so many people to HATCH?
Motherhood requires all hands on deck, and usually results in less time for ourselves, emotionally, physically, and time-wise. I think women were drawn to our brand because there was simply nowhere else to turn. HATCH is designed for women who are busy and need a one-and-done solution for throwing something on that feels good and can be worn day into night with no question.
What are some of the lessons you learned about yourself as you were pregnant and what have been the lessons you've learned about yourself as a mama?
When I was pregnant the world around me started to phase out - I was now thinking about someone other than just myself. So many questions, it was such a new language and new terrain, and I was so excited about the possibilities of what a new human being created by the level of myself and my husband, Max, would bring. As a mama, I’m learning lessons every day. I’m learning that being perfect is impossible and that guilt is a constant. I am so overwhelmed with the love, joy, and gratitude and am completely overjoyed when I look into my daughters’ eyes.
How has your relationship with your body evolved since having children?
Oh, do I miss my scarves that I’d wrap as a top. I’d run around the city nearly naked in my heyday. The days of feeling sexy and showing skin have quickly faded to feeling sexy by simply getting some sleep! As I’ve developed and my girls mature, I’m more comfortable in my skin – which is where I’m most at ease.
What are some wellness practices that keep you grounded?
I do yoga to breathe and I spin to sweat. Beach walks with podcasts in the summers and trips alone with my husband to have our alone time in the winter.
Describe motherhood in 3 words:
Emotional, inspirational, everything.
What are you most inspired by right now, in the space of motherhood, pregnancy, and women in general?
What a beautiful time it is right now for women. When I started HATCH in 2011, so few would cover or talk about maternity or celebrate a changing body, and now we see various shapes and sizes through so many campaigns. To be on the forefront of the conversation and watch the community around us catch up to where it’s meant to be has been incredibly rewarding and I’m so inspired by the time that we're in right now.
What do you feel is the connection between fashion and self-love + inner strength/ power?
I firmly believe that trying to be something you’re not, wearing something that doesn’t fit right, or spending money on luxury brands that mean nothing to you does nothing. When you feel comfortable in your own skin, that’s when beauty kicks in. It’s important for fashion to be a reflection of your inner strength and beauty and to really own who you are.
Where do you see the future of HATCH? What is your big vision?
Overall, my vision is to make sure HATCH reaches as many women as possible, whether that be online or through our physical retail locations. We will always continue to listen to our consumers by continuously expanding the conversation and creating products in order to help best serve their needs.
What is the legacy you would like to leave on the world?
Wow, that’s a powerful word. I really want to change the way women embrace this time of change. I want to create a community and be a destination where women can be heard and provide solutions and information to make this time better and safe. Pregnancy can be quite lonely and if HATCH can lend a hand and be a source for women with similar questions, curiosities, and excitement, then that’s a beautiful legacy I’d like to leave.
Any tips for raising little girls in today’s world?
Good luck!!
