S-Life Mag

Your source for nourishment, inspiration, and joy

Sakara exists at the intersection of science and spirit. Filling our bodies and plates with plants is deeply nourishing to the body and soul—something we know from experience that's been confirmed time and again by the latest research.

We tapped some of our most trusted mentors, healers, change-makers and friends to tell the stories of their own personal experiences with plant-based eating. Each has undergone profound changes in their health, performance, confidence and creativity by eating plant foods—and each has found a way to make this lifestyle their own. What it's not: dogmatic, restrictive or unrealistic. What it is: inspiring, motivating and worthy of emulating.

Order next week and discover for yourself what 14 days of eating exclusively plant-based can do for your mind, body and spirit.

Why do you personally eat plants?

I've actually always been a natural-born plant eater— I remember even as a young child, I'd ask for salads instead of french fries but other than that I eat a plant-based diet 90% of the time (I don't eat red meat or poultry, only seafood, its been 8 years now).

How do you make your health a priority?

Besides eating a mostly plant-based diet, I keep myself very active. I try to exercise at least 4-5 times a week with surfing, boxing, cardio, strength training, and some restorative work, too.

You’re an athlete and surfer — how has this impacted you on a physical, emotional, mental, spiritual level?

It's pushed me to keep going forward to get myself to the next skill level, surfing has been the hardest sport I've ever had to learn. It takes a lot of dedication and time. It’s not just about catching a wave onto white water anymore — I've learned how to read waves, maneuver the board, understand the wave momentums, walk on the board (more like shuffling at this point but soon!). It's taught me a lot about patience and has pushed me outside of my comfort zone, and I think that's always a great thing — to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

It's also really taught me to appreciate Mother Nature and the beauty of our oceans. It has overall made me such a happier person both mentally & spiritually.

Why does feeling good in your body matter?

You only have one body... Keep it healthy!

Are there foods, herbs, and supplements that make you feel best in your body every day?

I try not to take a lot of supplements, I like getting my vitamins naturally from different foods, but I have been really into Sakara's Probiotics and Beauty Chocolates lately.

Do you have any wellness non-negotiables?

SURFING.

What are some wild things you've done in the name of wellness?

Not sure if this falls into wellness category - but I've definitely have had a tarot reading then straight to a shaman appointment and a crystal healing session all in one day.  I was definitely feeling down that day. Ha.

How would you describe your relationship with your body 10 years ago vs now?

I treated my body so poorly 10 years ago. I was a PR girl and night-life kid that went out every night, ate so much junk food, and smoked a lot of cigarettes. I am so much happier in my 30s than in my 20s (and I look a lot better too!)
